On September 4, 2024, actress Jane Kaczmarek visited Mountain View High School for a podcast hosted by MVHS VISTA Academy’s “Art of Talking” podcast. The three-time Golden Globe nominee shared insights about her time filming the hit TV series “Malcolm in the Middle” and her experiences as an actress.
Jane Kaczmarek opened up about the challenges she faced in pursuing an acting career, including a lack of support from her parents. Her only early encouragement came from a teacher who suggested she attend an acting camp. Despite the financial burden of paying for the camp with her babysitting earnings, Kaczmarek persisted, eventually discovering her passion for theater.
Before landing major roles, Kaczmarek studied theater at the prestigious Yale University. She highlighted one of her favorite projects, a play called “Kindertransport,” which tells the story of a mother forced to leave her daughter behind during the Holocaust. Kaczmarek expressed a deep connection to the role, appreciating the chance to portray genuine emotions in a story rooted in real historical suffering.
Kaczmarek also discussed her journey on “Malcolm in the Middle.” Initially hesitant about the role, she eventually auditioned and was cast as the mom, Lois. She noted that playing Lois came naturally and even helped her manage stress due to the character’s outspoken personality. The series became a massive success, running for seven years and producing a total of 151 episodes, solidifying its place as a beloved TV classic.
